St. John Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) Leadership

St. John Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) is blessed to have a leadership team who are truly dedicated to Christ and accomplishing His will. Below you will find brief bio's of our leadership team and their qualifications for ministry.

Russell Wilkins

Senior Pastor


Russell Wilkins was appointed to serve as St. John Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) Senior Pastor in October 1976. Prior to that, he preached his first sermon on May 2, 1971, at Bethel Church of Christ in Roper and later was ordained in April 1973 by the Washington Norfolk District Assembly at Green Memorial Church of Christ in Williamston, NC.

The attributes that best describe Pastor Wilkins as a pastor are strong preaching, leadership development and counseling. He has expressed a burning desire to lead St. John Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ). Biblical views are embraced and encouraged, with members who care about the needs of those around them and who want to connect others to the body of Christ. Pastor Wilkins takes worship and preaching very seriously, spending the first hours of his day focused on Bible study.

“As Pastor of St. John and serving within the community, we come to the symbol church — the building — weekly, but after the benediction, we depart to serve. My philosophy is that the church must impact the community so the community will see the living Christ. As a church, we offer grace, and at St. John, we value what we call being unashamed to meet Jesus. I see with acute clarity, the condition of this world and how much we need Jesus. Year after year, I am energized to lead the people toward Jesus the Christ.”

He graduated from Barton College of Wilson, NC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Intermediate Education and Religion and Philosophy.  Pastor Wilkins earned a master's degree in Pastoral Ministry from Trinity Theological Seminary of Newburgh, Indiana.

Pastor Wilkins has two Children: Bradford and Brittany Wilkins and a Granddaughter Braelynn.
